Museum Improvements

MUSEUM UPDATES: $3 million

Funds raised for updates to the Museum will be used to:

  • Rework and update the entrance to the Museum on the west side of the church
  • Reorganize the existing space by creating more open and accessible exhibits
  • Clean and restore paintings and artifacts
  • Install a new gift shop
  • Increase natural lighting with skylights
  • Build additional patron restrooms
  • Install an elevator for handicap access to and from the lower level of the Museum

The Museum redesign will create an updated and inviting space where visitors can learn about the intertwining of St. Louis’ civic and religious history.  As the resting place of Bishop Joseph Rosati, the first Bishop of St. Louis, the Museum will once again be a place worthy of the historic artifacts and sacred treasures that call it home.

Upgrades to the Museum will support a more active Education Center and allow the Archdiocese to fully display its extensive collection of artifacts that date back to 1818, many of which are in storage today.  A greater emphasis on community programming is envisioned with the addition of a docent program, a lecture / film series and interactive, multi-media programs.

As the CityArchRiver 2015 plans come into sharper focus, plans for the west side of the Old Cathedral will be finalized in the area that is currently defined by Memorial Drive.
