Immaculate Conception Holy Day Mass Schedule

The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation, is observed Monday, December 8. The Mass Schedule is as follows:

7:00 am

11:15 am

12:10 pm

5:10 pm

As the observance of this solemnity falls on a Monday this year, there is no Vigil Mass Sunday Evening in anticipation of this holy day.

The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the oldest Marian feasts, dating back to the seventh century. In 1846, Mary was proclaimed patroness of the United States under this title. By her faith, obedience, and holiness, she teaches what it means to be a bearer of Christ to the world.

In 1991, the United States Catholic bishops voted to lift the obligation of attending Mass for U.S. Catholics on three specific holy days of obligation whenever these occur on a Saturday or a Monday. The three are the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (January 1); the solemnity of the Assumption (August 15); and the solemnity of All Saints (November 1). All other holy days, including the solemnities of the Immaculate Conception and the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), carry with them the obligation to attend Mass, regardless of the day on which they fall.
